What I’m trying to capture here is a summary of Oskar’s progress over the first week.

Orthopaedic Consult and CT Scan
Since Oskar is getting a fully body CT scan to check for any indications of cancer, we are trying to make the most of the sedation time to get detail studies of his left hind leg and front right elbow. The hind leg is to check to see if he does have a CCL tear and if so, how well it’s healing. His right front elbow is a bit weird. Since he was less than a year old, he’ll start favouring his front right leg if he’s been playing for too long or too rough. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it comes on quickly but also seems to resolve quickly. Too quickly to get him seen when he’s actively lame. He did have a series of x-rays done of both his hips and his elbows to see if there were any obvious defects when it first started to happen. Nothing abnormal was detected. But elbows are notoriously difficult to x-ray and it’s been 2 years. Hopefully x-rays from every angle will give us a better idea of what we are dealing with so we can make a plan that will effective for him. And it’s a nice distraction to think of the CT scan as looking for a potentially easily solvable ortho problem rather than looking for an aggressive form of cancer that, if present, will likely kill him.
An unexpected appointment
what a day!
Between Diagnosis and Surgery
I don’t know what’s worse; the surgery itself or the time spent constantly thinking about it before it happens. The obsessive reading of various forum posts, looking for people who have dealt with this situation before. Google image searches to see if I can find pictures of exactly what we are seeing. Reading studies to see if I can gain insight on what to expect…and having to look up at least three words in each paragraph. After reading the paragraph three or four times trying to make sure I understood it correctly. Posting on forums or Facebook groups myself to see if I can get assurance that Oskar’s going to be okay. And having to tell people what’s happening.
The day everything changed
The 29th rolls around and we head in for our appointment.
Spot makes an appearance
Sometime around the 25th or 26th of January, we noticed a white spot on Oskar’s left eye.
